Ekphrastic Writing: Writing in Conversation with Art with Julene Waffle

In this generative writing workshop, participants will explore ekphrastic writing—the art of responding to visual works through language. Guided by writer and educator Julene Waffle, we’ll use paintings, drawings, objects, and images as creative catalysts, translating what we see into vivid, thoughtful prose and poetry.

Through guided prompts, close looking, and supportive discussion, writers will learn how to move beyond simple description to engage with art emotionally, imaginatively, and critically. We’ll explore voice, metaphor, narrative, and perspective, asking: What does the artwork reveal? What does it conceal? And what does it awaken in us?

This workshop is open to writers of all levels—from seasoned poets to curious beginners. No prior experience with ekphrastic writing is necessary, just a willingness to look closely and write bravely.

Participants will leave with:

A deeper understanding of ekphrastic writing

New tools for observation and creative response

Original writing generated during the workshop

Fresh inspiration drawn from art and shared conversation

Come write with art, not just about it—and discover how visual forms can unlock new dimensions in your writing.

$15 per person, bring a notebook and writing utensil
