In this generative writing workshop, participants will explore the rich possibilities of ekphrastic writing—the practice of creating poetry and prose in response to visual art. Drawing inspiration from Rhea Nowak's exhibition Reading and Weaving and Call and Response, we'll use her layered works as points of entry into our own creative explorations.
Guided by writer and educator Julene Waffle, participants will spend time looking closely, noticing patterns, symbols, rhythms, and relationships within the artwork before translating those observations into language. Through a series of prompts and writing exercises, we'll consider questions raised by Nowak's work: How do we make meaning from marks and symbols? What stories emerge from repetition, structure, and gesture? How do we read not only words, but landscapes, memories, and experiences?
Together, we'll explore writing as a form of response, conversation, and discovery. Participants will be encouraged to move beyond description and engage with the artwork imaginatively, emotionally, and intellectually, finding their own pathways through themes of communication, translation, memory, and perception.
This workshop is open to writers of all levels, from experienced poets and prose writers to those simply curious about putting pen to paper. No prior experience with ekphrastic writing is necessary—just a willingness to look closely, reflect deeply, and follow where the work leads.
Participants will leave with:
• New approaches to observation and creative response
• Original writing generated during the workshop
• A deeper appreciation for the relationship between visual art and language
• Fresh inspiration sparked by art, writing, and conversation
Join us for an afternoon of close looking, thoughtful reflection, and creative exploration as we enter into dialogue with Rhea Nowak's work through the written word.
